In February and March of 2019, Lisa Snider of Access Changes Everything traveled across Canada on behalf of NNELS, and led EPUB Accessibility Workshops. Lisa has now recorded three webinars which cover much of the same information that was provided in the workshops, in a concise format.
Part 1 (64 minutes) provides an introduction to the topic of EPUBs and accessible publishing, covering the importance of accessibility, information on relevant legislation in Canada, who uses EPUBs, how people access EPUBs, the basics of EPUBs, differences between EPUB 2 and 3, and related standards and specifications.
Part 2 (58 minutes) and Part 3 (77 minutes) delve into the complexities of EPUBs and coding for accessibility. Part 2 discusses concepts and tips, gives coding examples, and offers an overview of best practices for both styling and structuring content. It also demonstrates screen-reader usage, and how to use the ACE Checker (an EPUB checker). Part 3 continues from Part 2, covering more concepts and tips. It includes a detailed discussion of image usage; information on Tables of Contents, Page Lists, Page Titles, Metadata, and Fixed Layout vs. Reflowable text; and an overview of some Accessibility Checkers.
We hope that you will find these Webinars useful and informative. They offer concrete, straightforward examples about incorporating accessibility into your workflow, in both big and small ways, so there is something for everyone!
